“Yada Yada Hi Dharmasya Glaanirbhavati Bhaarat; Abhyutthaanam Adharmasya Tadaatmaanam Srijaamyaham. Paritraanaaya Sadhunam Vinashaya Cha Dushkritam; Dharm Sansthaapnaarthaaya Sambhavaami Yugey Yugey.” – Sreemad Bhagawad Geeta (4/7 & 8)
In one of His most adorable, inspirational and popular Incarnations, Lord Vishnu as Sree Krishna brilliantly sets a very high level of human qualities that are to be inculcated uncompromisingly by us, as we call ourselves His ardent devotees!
Certainly, once again we shall worship Sree Krishna on Sree Krishna Janmaashtami, which, this year falls on 16th August. So let us remember certain fundamentals related to the same.
Sree Krishna, addressed here as Sree Bhagawaan, is one of the many Incarnations (Avtaar) of Bhagwaan Vishnu.
As declared by Himself, at the times of upheaval of adharm (unrighteousness), Lord Vishnu Incarnates Himself as per the need, for uplift and re-establishment of Dharm (Righteousness).
Hence, to accomplish the same, in one of His Incarnations, Bhagwaan Vishnu takes birth as the son of Sree Vasudev and Mata Devaki and is addressed as Sree Krishna.
Krishna – Krishih Bhuvaachako Shabdah, Nashcha Nivrittivaachakah; Tayoraikyam Param Brahm Krishnam Ityabhidheeyatey. Meaning – Krishih indicates “Bhu” “land for obtaining crop” and Na indicates “Nivritti” “dispassion”; so both put together makes “Krishna”, the One who is “Parabrahm” “Supreme Self”.
The great Pandav archer/warrior Arjun, addressed by Sree Bhagwaan here as Bhaarat, is very significant indeed for all of us Bhaarateeya-s. “Bha” “light” and “Rat” “revel”, both put together makes “Bhaarat”, one who revels in light. So Arjun is one who revels in the “light of knowledge”. What about all of us Bhaarateeya-s?
Dharm – One of the most important and most misinterpreted words in the world is “Dharm”. Though it has many meanings, we shall see some of the most relevant meanings here. Dharm is duty. Dharm is religion. Dharm is righteousness. Dharm is the essential element of anything, without which, the thing loses itself. Dharm is the Essence of the Self, the Supreme Brahman.
Considering all the above meanings of Dharm, when we try to understand the given Shlok, it is found that actually all these meanings are absolutely relevant for the wholesome comprehension of what Sree Bhagwaan is declaring here.
Adharm would mean any such thought, word and deed, that are contrary to any of the aspects of Dharm given above.
The nature displays varied aspects of Dharm and whenever any of these are violated, there is destruction, distress, havoc, calamity, epidemic, carnage, extinction, massacre and so on. With their selfish motives, the human beings too lay their hands in adding into these relentlessly that cause the acts of Adharm.
Sadhu – This word has been unfortunately used randomly in our society, due to which it has lost its sacredness! The word “Sadhu” means “one who has a pure heart, sharp intellect, tranquil mind and a good health.
Thus, a Sadhu qualifies to be a capable instrument of the Almighty. Therefore, whenever required, Sree Bhagwaan Himself gets Manifest (Sagun Brahm) and reassures the uplift and protection of “Sadhu”.
Vinash is annihilation, destruction, elimination, eradication, termination and so on. None other than the Divine Almighty is authorised and would be justified to execute the harsh acts of Vinash. When such justice is taken in hands by the humans, it turns into un-righteous act (Dushkarm). Such heinous humans (Dushkritaam) surely meet with self-destruction (Vinash).
Again, none other than the Divine Almighty is authorised and is capable to implement the law of nature to re-establish the much needed Dharm in any form pertaining to any of its aspects. For which, He Incarnates Himself in various Divine Forms through aeons (Sambhavaami Yugey Yugey). These Divine Acts of the Almighty are defined as re-establishment of the righteous (Dharm Sansthaapan).
Bhagwaan Sree Vedvyas has very extensively explained the prime purpose of one of the Almighty Lord’s Divine Incarnations as Sree Krishna, through various Scripture compiled and authored by Him, such as Sreemad Bhagawad Geeta from the Epic Mahaabhaarat which is also named as Jaya, Sreemad Bhaagwat Mahaapuraan which is one of the 18 Puraan-s authored by Him, and so on. It would be a seeker’s meritorious destiny, relentless effort and unabated Spiritual practices that the seeker would be able to understand the right import of what Sree Vedvyas has expounded.
On the auspicious occasion of Sree Krishna Janmaashtami, this year falling on 16th August, pray sincerely seeking His blessings to cultivate a comprehensive approach towards the invaluable Scriptures offered to the humanity by our Gracious Guru Parampara.
