GUNAS & ACTIONS

Snigdha (Delhi – NCR)

Hari Aum! Can you kindly explain - Actions are impressed upon by gunas and these gunas we carry from many births. But while performing any action how can I come to know which guna is enforcing my action.

Manish ji’s reply: [as understood by me]

“Let's say you are called upon to do something and you have decided that you will do it at so and so time. Later, doesn't your mind start doubting? – ‘Is it required? Do i need to do it now only? What if i don't do? What if i tell someone else to do? What will i gain out of it?’ etc etc.. Where are they coming up from? This is from the gunas at play - Rajas and Tamas. Very rarely our actions spring from Sattwik guna. That's why mind has to be very stable and under the influence of Sattwa for decisions to be righteous.
Our Scriptures tell us, we have certain times when specific gunas are predominant. Sattwa during Brahm muhurt, Rajas during day time and Tamas during Dusk. When Nature provides the most conducive environment for Sattwa guna to predominate in us, we are bound in deep sleep. On the contrary, we are just following the West for deciding on important matters over late night dinners when Tamas prevails! We choose as free individuals to go contrary to Nature and expect the best from Nature. Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda ji says – ‘Freedom is not what I want to do. To not do what I wish to do is Freedom’.
In our weakness we blame others that they have forced us into something. It won’t work that way! We must learn to take thoughtful and voluntary decisions by keeping the right frame of mind and train our mind to be under the Sattwik influence.”
