VIVEK & VAIRAGYA

Shikha (Chh. Sambhaji Nagar)

“Hari Aum!

Q) Can you kindly explain how can we practice Vivek & Vairagya in day to day life?"

Manish ji’s reply:

[As understood by me]

Vivek and Vairagya are 2 important qualifications for a Vedantic seeker. Before practice, we need to understand them properly. Vairagya is, when one is not attracted to the objects of senses and is also not attached to the actions to secure them. In our daily living, we are unable to practice this because we lack 'Discrimination'. Discrimination - in what is my intent while performing any action. Whether is it that of attachment or is it pure? Whether it is towards ephemeral or Eternal?

Even if i go on foot to the temple, or by dandwat pranaam, fasting and following all other austerities etc, will my action still be called a detached one? Am I going to the Lord just to be with Him or to get any of my worldly desires fulfilled and come in manifestation? What am I ultimately working for, should be pondered upon. Am I actually applying Vivek or I am constantly seeking to satisfying desires? Do I have true affinity towards Lord, my true Swaroop? How can I cultivate that?

Diligent and sincere practice of Shravanam, Mananam and Nidhidhyasan, the 3 preliminary steps of Gnyaan Yog, can help me shift from the path of ephemeral to Real. Regular listening, reading of the Scriptural Texts expounded (Shravanam) and pondering continuously over the Truths revealed in Them (Mananam) will help purify the mind and make it single pointed towards the Lord, preparing the antahkaran for Nidhi Dhyaasan. Nidhi Dhyaasan is an experience of a continuous divine flow of sakaaratmak or sajaatiya vritti pravaah. Like the flow of Holy Mother Ganga overcoming all obstacles and flowing strong with full force. Nidhi Dhyaasan when experienced, after sincere practice of Shravanam and Mananam, is the state to be sustained despite all odds.
