KINDLE LIFE

Hari Aum!

Our prostrations to the Guru Parampara. Bowing down the to the Lotus Feet of Her Holiness Maa Purnanandaji, and with at most gratitude and thanks to Manishji for all his support, the SISS Yuva Satya Study Circle Class from Dubai, UAE, with all humility would like to offer the synopsis of our recent learning in the Class. We are currently studying ‘Kindle Life’; and below are the summaries of the first 13 essays from ‘Kindle Life’, which we discussed so far in our Circle. The book written by His Holiness Gurudev Swami Chinmayanandaji presents the highest Vedantic philosophy, in such simplistic and interesting manner, enabling us to digest it easily. Despite being simple, the book still maintains all the gravity and grandeur of Vedanata. It is really helping and guiding us in a step-by-step manner, to put in practice the Vedantic ideas to solve our day-to-day problems and evolve. We are so fortunate and blessed to be connected with SISS, at this young age.

Freedom & License :
Our Rishis investigated into why despite all progress man is not happy and formulated self-regulation and discipline as a solution for gaining permanent joy out of relationship with the world of objects. Our scriptures are like a manual for efficient functioning of the complex human machine. The choice however to use the manual, to make or mar ourselves, is ours alone.

Art of Right Contact :
Licentiousness leads to disaster. Solution is scriptures as it prescribes laws of living. Instead of complaining about evil in world, we need to understand the 'art of establishing Right Contact' with the world, to improve our subjective personality. Our lack of dexterity in facing the challenges is the problem to be addressed and not the evil outside. You will conserve a lot of mental energy, which gives you peace, by developing gratitude to the Lord, instead of having jealousy.

Man's Heritage :
Independence means to dis-engage (Asanga) from slavish dependence upon objects, to save one from getting lost in the agitated ocean of constant material changes. Like a mariner who trusts his compass, trust scriptures which will always indicate the right direction. Remain calm and put own efforts in finding an ideal in life and rise from the level of petty emotions to the loftier heights of the chosen ideal - keeping the head (discriminative intelligence) above the storms of the heart (emotions). Develop courage and intellectual honesty, to live true to our conviction in dedication to the chosen ideal.

The Joy of Living :
Propelled by revulsion to sorrow and craving for joy, man endlessly chases happiness in the ever-changing world of objects. The joy experienced by senses doesn’t lie in the object. Happiness is a subjective phenomenon depending on the tranquility of mind. Our scriptures help us to awaken the mind's dormant faculty to be engaged in a more permanent and fuller happiness, which is independent of objects. Detach the mind from the object and attach it to the Lord.

The Dual Path :
Modern man considers self-control and discipline as shackles put on his freedom. Rather than unintelligently suppressing sense enjoyment, inspired by higher ideals, sublimate your higher understanding, as envisaged by scriptures. Of the path of pleasant (preyas) and path of good (sreyas), man chooses preyas and resists religious percepts. All men of determination and discrimination choose the right (of sreyas), which is detested in the beginning but, ultimately it leads to greater happiness and a sense of fulfillment.

Harmony of Existence :
Quality of life depends on experiences. Every experience is constituted of 3 factors: a) the experiencer; b) the object experienced; and c) their relationship. The Experiencer is made of four different personalities working simultaneously: a) physical; b) emotional; c) intellectual: and d) spiritual. Each personality interacting differently creates confusion within man, driving him to dejection and delusion, leading so samsara. Scripters can show us the way, but it is our own efforts to follow scriptures sincerely, at all the four levels of personalities that can create the desired integration among the four, to help face challenges in life.

Personality & Rehabilitation :
Consciousness on the other hand is ONE and same in all. So the scope for enhancement lies only in the other variable components - ie., mind and intellect - due to which complex pattern of experiences takes place. Our Rishi's therefore studied in detail these 2 subtle 'experiencers' dwelling in us, - the seat of all emotions & thoughts. ‘Mother Sruti' (Scriptures) nurtures and provide ways and means for chastening emotions & edifying thoughts.

Man and Mind :
Religion through discrimination helps improve state of mind, and enjoy happiness in the World. Impulses and feelings generated by the mind manifests into actions. Mind, which is flow of thoughts, creates confusion if it starts to react to the impulses that it receives, without taking direction from Intellect. However, unlike animal, man exercising his intellectual faculty (capacity to discriminate), can make his actions dynamic and productive. Religion teaches us the technique of development of this faculty, which is the secret of success behind all men of achievement.

The Path of Perfection :
Mind and Intellect is the essence of the human personality and its quality and texture depends upon our inherent inclinations called Vasanas. The physical body is merely a garb, with five holes (sense organs) through which stimuli from external world reach us. Life is nothing but continuous transaction of the receipt of stimuli and the corresponding responses. Man alone, through his mind & intellect, has the unique capacity to neutralize adverse stimuli. Philosophy and religion serve as architects in molding and reshaping man's vasanas or tendencies

The Mechanism of Action :
Vasanas manifest into Desires and drive Thoughts and Actions. Man alone, has the ability to exercise self-effort in choosing his actions, by erasing his Vasanas, and thereby transcends mental agitations to attain divine status. Scriptures indicate the right direction for such self-efforts. If Mind & Intellect is neglected, the individual like a boat in the ocean of life will be tossed hither and thither by waves of challenges.

The Law of Karma :
Past Actions leave Vasanas, which influences and propels future Action. Law of Karma, governed by theory of cause & effect, covers past, present & future. Man is a product of his past karmas, over which he has no control (Prarabdha /Destiny) but can choose his present action (Purusartha /Self effort). Therefore, future is in the control of man. Pursartha, the freedom to modify is influenced by past. Religion is a scientific formula for right living.

Play of Mind :
World is nothing but an objective projection of one's subjective feelings and thoughts. Same world provides different vision, as the 'inner equipment' projects them. Religion gives techniques of inner development. This enables man to interpret the world in its true perspective. "Master the mind and you master the world". But ignorant man believes in development of the external world more than rehabilitation of inner. Such prosperity is like sumptuous dinner laid in front of a patient suffering from indigestion. Brahmacharya, Ahimsa and Satyam are therefore prescribed for our Physical, Mental & Intellectual personalities respectively.

Fundamentals of Living :

Despite all prosperity, our mental makeup causes stress. As a remedy religion prescribes certain fundamental values and virtues of life - essence of which is self-control, non-injury and truthfulness. Brahmacharya is prescribed for discipline at physical level to avoid self-afflicted ills of living on mere sense gratification. Ahimsa as a mental discipline refers to acts of love and kindness, meaning good - even if it hurts in the short run. Satyam as discipline, at intellectual level means, truly living to your ideals.
