There is no other purpose other than purification of mind as Vedanta is indicating a meditation which has nothing to do with our physical self. It is all to do with our subtle, causal and pure self. Atamvishudhya is the purpose to meditate. Bhagwan here says all the activities of my mind and senses have to be put under cessation. Here we are talking about the lower Ego centric Self which has to be purified so that it can be the Pure Self. The Self is Sadchidanand, but now there is imposition of Sattwa, Rajas, Tamas - all contamination. Make the mind single pointed by focusing its attention on any mantra/on our breathing. Concentration helps in meditation. Restraint the activity of mind (do not go into past/future). Pay attention to your own Self to become aware of your Self and thus mind becomes pure.
