My Journey at SISS – Spiritual Retreat ’19

Sri. Ramani Iyer
Singapore
(July’19)

Hari Aum!

Attending the retreat at SISS is always a divine intervention for me, and it always happens against all odds. This time was no different. However, as soon as I arrived at SISS it was a transformation, I felt I travelled back in time during the period of great Rishis and Munis, immersed in Vedic knowledge. This feeling is no different from pilgrimage to the Himalayas cut off from the rest of the world.

I always had a longing to learn from our revered Scriptures, but little did I imagine that I would be blessed and fortunate to come closer to this vast reservoir of knowledge. In today’s world one has to be really blessed to even get a close glimpse of it and I am ever grateful for this opportunity provided at SISS. The journey which started right from my early days of reading Amar Chitra Katha as well as various other sources across different timelines has gone through many learnings and unlearnings. Learning here, under the guidance of Guru Maa is always a revelation as if I am listening directly from Guru Veda Vyasa & Maa Saraswati.

Having moved to a new country one is exposed to different cultures and traditions and the inquisitive nature of my mind coupled with being observant had new learnings. This process of new learnings, and unlearning of earlier established knowledge and with the limited ability to use the power of discrimination while being away from the presence of Guru can create conflicts. This conflict which was going on within me for a while was completely dissolved while sitting in the august presence of Maa Saraswati and directly hearing from Maa Saraswati Herself. I was completely one with Vedanta and feeling ‘purna’. This realization and revelation in this retreat for me personally has a huge significance and impact.

While we live in a world where the mind is equated to a Ferrari and self-doubt has destroyed lives leading to depression and modern learning is data driven through the application of complex technology, Guru Dattatreya defined the fundamental platform for the process of Right knowledge in the form of Tyaag and Sannyaas and the methodology applied for its learning is itself a huge learning for me. We must use the different levers of mind and know its appropriate application. These different levers of mind are referred to as ‘Pramanas’. Amongst these which pramanas have to be resorted and when, is decided by the situation and the nature of object concerned. This delicate balance of application of the pramanas is the great art of learning which our sages have perfected and modern world has a lot to learn from!

Guru Dattatreya's emphasis on true learning and path to individual growth can begin only with application of a sound mind while being aware of your natural surroundings. The text which is a narration by lord Krishna to his friend Uddhavji in a completely different setting as compared to Mahabharata is a great gift to humanity.

We can always get the details of the subject Sree Uddhav Geeta and Pramanas from various sources, however the impact can never be the same as attending the retreat at SISS and listening directly from Guru Maa in the august presence of Maa Saraswati. Now I know why the calling happened to me? It helped me in answering a lot of my questions and in resolving my conflicts!
