गुरुर्ब्रह्मा ग्रुरुर्विष्णुः गुरुर्देवो महेश्वरः ।
गुरुः साक्षात् परं ब्रह्म तस्मै श्री गुरवे नमः ॥

My humble pranaams at the holy feet of Maa Purnanandaji. We were indeed blessed to have Maa amongst us in Mumbai. Though Maa’s stay was for a short period but the impact it has left behind is a teaching for a life time.

The talks on Sree Hanuman Chalisa by the great saint Tulsidas ji was rendered from a totally different point of view. Since Maaji had to give her discourse on the holy text within a duration of one and a half hour, she dealt with the most important verses to give us an insight into the great work. She enlightened us on the Bhava with which one should read and follow the Scriptures at large to benefit the maximum from reading it. The importance of remembering and praying to the Guru, in this case Sant Tulsidas ji , who has given us this holy doha is required for cleaning the mirror of ones’ mind. Right at the outset Sant Tulsidas ji extols us the phalashruthi of reading the sacred text which is to be blessed with the four fruits of life (Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha). We pray to Sree Hanuman ji (praying to whom is enough for our wishes to reach Lord Rama’s ears, राम दुआरे तुम रखवारे ।होत न आज्ञा बिनु पैसारे॥), to provide us with the right strength, wisdom and Knowledge in return for the afflictions and blemishes that we have. Reading of Sree Hanuman Chalisa with devotion will make the reader perfect in all aspects, the witness of this being Lord Shiva himself. Emphasis has to be in reading with the correct understanding of the text rather than mere recital.

The discourses at the holy Subramania temple at Thiru chembur was a feast for the ears and the soul. Sree Adi Shankara with his poetic brilliance has composed the “Subramanya Bhujangam” and set it in bhujanga(snake-like) metre. The bhujanga is not just indicative of the metre, it also signifies the false superimposition on Reality(the rope being thought of as a snake in a dark room). Right at the beginning Sree Adi Shankaracharya jistarts with the invocation to Lord Ganesh, whose tusk is symbolic of Adhvaitha. The elephant, being both the grossest and the subtlest at the same time should make one strive to be similar. The acharya also offers his invocation to Lord Brahma(the creative aspect), Lord Indra (the mind and the senses) and many more aspects. The Acharya, teaches that the great Truth cannot be explained in words. It is necessary to find our “Spiritual heart” which is the dwelling place of the Divine which is verily the Ksheera Sagar. This would be possible when we are able to eliminate the six obstacles which do not allow the mind to merge into the heart. There needs to be a Pralaya within us to destroy all the past thoughts and experiences which cannot be possible without the blessings of Lord Shiva(the constructive destroyer). The purpose of Karmakanda is Self-Realisation and liberation with Para Bhakthi can only be given by the holy Mother Herself. In prayer there needs to be great level of meditation and contemplation. There needs to be a constant effort to understand the words of the scriptures which will help in transcending our lower nature.

Continuation in meditation and reading is absolutely important for any progress to happen. One should not suspend the practice because a slow progress is better than no progress. God in all his mercy is ready to give us everything that we ask for but it is our great Gurus who teach us what we need to ask for. We need to strive to be holy and pure like the lotus feet of our Guru to inculcate the noble virtues our Guru possesses. This would help in converting the sattwa-rajas-tamas in us to the holy trinity Brahma- Vishnu – Maheshwara.

The talks in Sree Shringeri mutt was on “Our Spiritual Heritage” where all the focus was about rising oneself from a social animal to becoming a Spiritual being. Our great Saints, Rishis and Seers have very knowledgeably divided our lives into four Ashramas. If one follows their Dharma as stipulated by the Vedas there can be no mistake.
