Hari Aum!

Key take away from the April Retreat, 2017: When Lord Ganesha dissolves the obstacles, His immanent presence is clearly revealed in and around us]

First of all, deep respect and heartfelt prostration at the feet of revered Gurumaa for the discourse (Sree Ganapati Atharvasheersh Upanishad, SGAU) in such a lucid style on the Jayanti of Adiguru Shankaracharya (who, as the Jagadguru, is none other than the Jnana Avatar of Lord Shiva) and Pujya Gurudev Swami Chinmayanandaji.

Then, much appreciation and admiration to Manishjee for the well planned and thoughtful organization of the whole event for us to benefit to the maximum.

It was also a moment of reconciliation for us to acknowledge the grand feeling that the ambience of the institution (SISS) is getting more and more 'conducive' to be the most happening place in the NCR for us, thanks to the dedicated and inspired workforce, with blessings from Sree Iswara, grace of Gurumaa and able guidance of Manishjee.

Another pleasant development that was unfolding side by side the discourse was fruitful engagement of the young children in learning Yoga, devotional songs and classical dances under the guidance of some of our very own 'spirited teachers' and, then performing them as 'RAJOPACHARA' at the Holy Altar.

In a nutshell, it was a wholesome treatment for all of us, whether seniors or juniors.

Now, the takeaway (from Sree Ganapati AtharvaSheersh Upanishad, in some detail):
Shanti Mantra:
ॐ भ॒द्रं कर्णे॑भिः शृणु॒याम॑ देवाः … … …

1. Change the internal mindset (vision) so that every input from the world is a call of auspiciousness.

2. The focus should be: whatever opportunity we are given, let us utilize it for higher purpose only, so that the higher vision in turn uplifts our own selves.

3. Proper tuning of Mind Intellect complex for an inspired living [mind-the ruler of the senses (Indra), intellect-the decision making authority (Sun), sharpness & clarity in understanding (taarkshyo), regulated lifestyle/bodily functions (disciplined by Brihaspati)]

Peace at three levels (world outside, phenomenal forces and world inside)!

Shree Ganapati Atharvasheersh Upanishad (गणपत्यथर्वशीर्षोपनिषत् )
ॐ नम॑स्ते ग॒णप॑तये

1. ॐ, the supreme reality is the Path forward and towards achieving this goal, Ganapati Upanishad is a short but complete technique, approaching first from unmanifest to manifest, then completing it reverse way- manifest to unmanifest.

2. Not perceivable by five senses, the unmanifest, the essence underlying our very existence, indicated by 'TATVAMASI' is manifested as Ganesh, the first principle who then causes others to manifest, exist in forms or to dissolve in Him. No circumstances or situations can be apart from the original cause that is Him. Nothing is beyond His reach. He is the original protector to us from all obstacles, outside or inside.

3. As the original source, all the aspects that It becomes are subset or effects of the original cause only...whether be it speech, the feelings or the existence-all represents various aspects of one reality only. Once we know this intuitively, all the mystery of life gets revealed in our vision. How this knowledge is known, owned and lived, this is the scope of Ganesha Vidya (technique), taught by this Upanishad.

3. Building Blocks of the universe- the five categories of elements- which are experienced through our five senses, represents how the unmanifest expresses through manifestation to give a apparent separate existence. Depending on the level of spiritual maturity, connecting links of the apparent plurality become intuitively known, understood, mentally felt or just instinctively taken for granted (as habits) to transact in the world, as indicated by Para, Pashyanti, Madhyama, Vaikhari respectively.

4. Presenting a truly unitary perspective, where three gunas, three states of consciousness, three bodies of existence, three times (past, present & future) are witnessed or transcended to dissolve into oneness is what the state of Ganesh points to.

5. Sitting at the base of consciousness (muladhara, the 'unconscious mind'), Ganesha holds the potential for all possible future evolution, while retaining the present life-form at its 'default' level. The three power forces - Ischa Shakti (Power of Desiring-Durga), Kriya Shakti (Power of Action-Lakshmi), Jnana Shakti (Power of Knowledge-Saraswati) are enabled by Him only. By awakening to Him, the Yogis always meditate to reach the essence of consciousness.

6. Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra, Indra, Agni, Vayu, Surya, Chandrama all these, and Brahman, the three Lokas, Aum as Ganesh.....that builds up the context to plant the potent seed form of Ganesh, "Aum Gam" at the unconscious mind (by chanting the mantra consciously). The link to connect manifest (conscious) and unmanifest (unconscious) is thus been established and, having established it, we are graced with the most potent mantra to uplift our mood and shift our consciousness to higher level, " oṃ gaṃ gaṇapa’taye namaḥ" ll ॐ गं ग॒णप॑तये नमः ll

7. To complete the lesson, we are then suggested to undertake a reverse process, through the manifested form of the lord Ganesh.
Let us channelize the mind towards the form (Ekdanta), meditate on his form (Vakratunda) to get absorbed consciously so that a link is established and make ourselves open for Him (Danti) to awaken our consciousness.

8. A unique idea of Vedic wisdom is to direct our mind towards a meaningful form so long the mind's gross tendency for attachment is strong. Here too, He is given a beautiful symbolism with four hands, reddish glow, large belly, large ears, red dress etc for the benefit of the devotees.

9. Resonating with the hearts of the devotees, the lord Ganesh has descended for the cause of the world, though He is Achyuta (non-mutable); only to inspire us, the devotees to move forward towards the eternal truth.

10. He is the first in hierarchy of Prakriti and the original Purusha; the precursor to the plurality.

11. This is the knowledge that liberates one from attachment, worries, fear or anxieties of life; no doubt that Shree Ganapati Atharvasheersh Upanishad is a complete sadhana process in itself, for first hand realization of the knowledge of reality behind the apparent plurality.

ॐ गं ग॒णप॑तये नमः

[NB: In trying to put the takeaways in written form I am aware that whatever mistakes or errors that might have crept, all these are completely due to my own incapacity to fully absorb the wisdom taught by Gurumaa; as such, it is entirely attributable to my limitation only.]
